Tired of the hoary, "All history is contemporary history?" The inescapable fact is that historians writing for the general public are beholden to fashion their work with a contemporary feel. It has to reflect the modish trend of interpreting the past, making reference to hot topics in the news and employing a vocabulary of the mainstream media, lest the work is ridiculed as a musty museum piece.
