Sina to Focus on Mobile Internet in 2013

Chinese Internet portal Sina Corp. announced a restructuring plan for 2013 based on a "mobile first" business strategy. The pending changes were announced December 28 by Sina CEO Charles Chao. Facing increased competition in the mobile Internet market, the company plans to put more emphasis on microblog development and its portal division. The model includes a strategy for developing new microblogging products. In addition, the company's music and microblogging divisions will merge.

Registration Planned for Website Users

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress approved December 28 a plan to require real-name website registrations. The decision is expected to affect hundreds of millions of mainlanders who use email, online forums and other services on Chinese websites. The decision doesn't specify which government agency would monitor implementation of the rule, nor say when it might take effect. More than 550 million people use the Internet regularly.
