Diagnosed with kidney disease in 1993, Hu Songwen spent six years receiving hemodialysis treatment in the hospital. But after healthcare costs continued to eat into his family's savings, Hu said he was forced to create a homemade hemodialysis machine from everyday items. Each round of self-serviced hemodialysis costs him about 60 yuan, about an eighth of what Hu spent on individual hospital treatments.
